Many Americans, Europeans and others who live in tropics, where humidity is high, suffer from sweat bumps. Some of them become acclimatized, while others may continue to be troubled by it throughout the hot season.
Popularly known as prickly heat or heat rash or miliaria, this red bumps appear in areas where the concentration of sweat glands is more. When sweat is trapped in the skin, you are prone to get sweat bumps. The condition arises from blockage of sweat glands within the mid portion of epidermis. As a result of this clogging, sweat escapes into the epidermis (upper layer of skin) causing severe irritation and tiny numerous lesions called sweat bumps.
Though not serious condition sweat bumps cause great discomfort. At times these heat bumps can be a symptom of heat stroke which is life threatening condition. However besides this sweat bumps; heat stroke is characterized with more serious symptoms that are more valuable in diagnosis of the disease. This includes dehydration, fatigue, breathing difficulty, confusion and so on.
Usually sweat bumps may not require any treatment as they are self healing, but to alleviate the discomfort there are several home remedies found effective.
What Causes Sweat Bumps?
Sweat bumps is a common problem for many people, especially those who perspire a lot.Most often the red, irritating tiny lesions appear as a result of clogging or malfunction of sweat gland. This leads the sweat to be trapped in the skin. Several reasons promote prickly heat.
- Hot and humid weather is prominent reason for sweat bumps.
- Babies are prone to it because their sweat glands are underdeveloped. This leads to sweat entrapment and clogging of sweat glands.
- Sweat bumps also develop in people who perspire more if their job demands so. Person working in front of a furnace, people doing strenuous physical exertion or an activity are extremely susceptible for development of sweat bumps.
- Wearing certain fabric clothes which does not allow the sweat to evaporate can lead to prickly heat.
- Wearing tight fitting clothes which constantly rub against the skin can cause sweat bumps.
- Use of electric blanket to sleep is also a cause for formation of tiny bumps on the skin.
- Use of cosmetic products can clog the pores.
- Heat rash appears as result of side effect of certain medicines.
- Obese babies and adults are likely to suffer from prickly heat.
Symptoms Of Sweat Bumps
- The lesions produced consist of innumerous pin head sized red bumps. Prickly heat or sweat bumps is common around the neck, back, groin, armpits and in front of the abdomen. They also occur on exposed areas such as the back of hands.
- The lesions are very prickly and irritating. They swell and burst releasing irritating sweat which can cause lot of itching.
- Sometime the lesions get filled with pus. It usually contains sterile pus. However, constant scratching can lead to secondary pyogenic infection.
- Itching, burning and tingling are aggravated by exaggerated sweating.
- Palms and soles are always spared.
Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Sweat Bumps
- Take cold showers at least two times in a day if you are suffering from heat rash. This will soothe the burning and itching. At the same time it will help to wash off the sweat and dirt which clog the pores.
- Apply Aloe Vera gel on the affected region.
- Corn starch powder and oatmeal are effective time tested home remedies for getting rid of sweat bumps. After taking cold bath, sprinkle cornstarch powder on the sweat bumps.
- Pour one cup of oatmeal in tub containing water. Person should soak in the tub for few minutes. You can also add a spoonful of baking soda in the tub.
- Apply sandalwood paste prepared by mixing rose water and sandalwood powder.
- As far as possible stay in an air conditioned room.
- Use talcum powder liberally.
- Medicated powder and strong lotions should be avoided as they can produce secondary eczema.
- Wear light clothing. Nylon and other synthetic garments should be strictly avoided.
