No one would like to have unsightly skin bumps on their body, especially on the exposed parts such as face, neck or on hands. Skin bumps are swollen areas or lumps on skin with or without itching. The surface of the bumps can be smooth or rough, the color can be dark or flesh colored, they can be soft or hard. Often they are harmless skin conditions.
Skin bumps can be due to various causes, it can be as simple as an insect bite or a serious condition such as skin cancer.Small flesh colored skin bumps can be due to infection, inflammation or it can be an abnormal skin growth. The growth can be non cancerous or cancerous.
What Causes Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition that can affect arms, thighs and buttocks. Keratosis pilaris are small flesh colored acne like bumps which gives a sandpaper appearance to the affected skin area. It is not a serious skin condition, though difficult to treat. Usually keratosis pilaris disappears after the age of 30.
Keratosis appears when there is excessive built up of keratin over the skin.Keratin is a type of protein which protects the skin from infections and environmental pollution. Excess of keratin forms crusts on the skin and blocks the opening of the hair follicles. Usually there is cluster of crust that gives rise to bumpy and rough surface over the skin which gives a sandpaper appearance to the skin. The built up of excess of keratin is not known but scientists associate the condition with genetics and with other skin conditions such as ichthyosis vulgaris and atopic dermatitis.
Flesh Colored Bumps Treatment
It is very difficult to treat keratosis pilaris. However you can improve the skin appearance with certain measures.
- Do not scrub your arms vigorously.
- Pat your skin dry after bathing, so that some moisture retain in the skin.
- Use a moisturizer twice in a day, especially after bathing. It ensures to soften dry and rough skin of your arm because of small bumps.
- Topical exfoliants, and topical retinoids are usually prescribed by doctors.
Small Flesh Colored Bumps On Hands
An insect bite such as bed bug can cause small flesh colored bump on the hand. In the beginning there is irritation and itching at the site of swelling. Over a period of time the condition usually resolves. Prepare paste by mixing baking soda, salt and water; apply it on the affected site for relief. You can apply aloe vera gel on the site of bite, it brings relief in itching.
Keratoacnthomas are round small flesh colored bumps found on the hands. There is a crater at the center of keratoacnthomas which contains greasy material. They can also appear on face, arm besides back of hand. They disappear after few months but leave a scar. The exact cause is not known, but the triggering factor is believed to be sun exposure and exposure to harmful chemicals. They are found more in men than women. KA is usually seen in fair individual. Treatment is surgical removal.
