Why A Pregnant Woman Should Not Gain Too Much Weight?

Pregnancy brings about many changes in a woman’s body. Weight gain is one of the inevitable changes in almost all pregnant women. Right from the day of conception bodily changes starts to occur. As days and months pass by, the changes become more noticeable.

Most woman start putting on weight after conceiving, but weight gain is more towards the later months of pregnancy as compared to in early months. Partly it is the weight of the growing baby, some amount of it is due to extra water in the body which is needed for baby’s circulation and for amniotic fluid and the rest is accumulation of fat.

Having said that, too much of weight gain is not good for the baby as well as for the pregnant woman. Normally a pregnant woman gains around 10 to 15 kg in the nine months, anything more than this can produce trouble for the baby as well as for the mother. Effects Of Excessive Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Women who gain too much of weight during pregnancy can face several health problems during the nine months. Surplus weight puts pressure throughout the body which can impact blood and fluid circulation.

Too much of weight make her difficult to move around. All these factors can lead to physical problems such as leg cramps, backaches, hemorrhoids, joint pain, heartburn and easy fatigue.

Women who gain too much weight during their pregnancy are at greater risk of suffering from gestational diabetes. It is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. In most women the sugar level returns back to normal after childbirth. However, it increases the risk of getting it in future pregnancies. Besides, diabetes during pregnancy can increase many other complications such as preeclampsia.

A pregnant woman is also at risk of suffering from pre-eclampsia in case if there is extreme weight gain. The main symptom of pre-eclampsia is high blood pressure, headache, nausea, giddiness etc. The condition can be life threatening for mother and child.

Too much of weight gain during pregnancy can increase the size of baby. A bigger weighing baby is not a problem, but it becomes difficult for the baby to come out from the birth canal during labor. Most often large sized baby is delivered through cesarean section.

Lastly if a woman gains too much of weight than expected during pregnancy, it becomes a strenuous task for her to shed it after childbirth. Significant amount of weight gain, may take longer time and effort to lose those extra pounds.

How To Avoid Excessive Weight Gain During Pregnancy?

It can be a challenging task for a woman to maintain healthy weight during pregnancy. However, if she follows certain useful steps she can manage her weight and prevent becoming obese.

  • Try to keep your weight under control when you want to become pregnant.
  • Eat in moderation and frequently instead of three large meals.
  • Drink enough water as it has many other benefits aside from reducing cravings for food. It relieves constipation which is common problem during pregnancy.
  • Eat more vegetables and fruits as they contain plenty of vitamins and minerals.
  • Eat diet that contains proteins, carbohydrates and fats in right amount. Instead of sugary products eat foods that are made up of complex carbohydrates. Reduce the intake of processed foods and fried foods.
  • Walk daily for 30 minutes.
  • Check your weight every week.
