  • Abortifacients now come in pill forms.
  • Previously when pills were not available, abortion would be done through a procedure called aspiration abortion.
  • The most common abortion pill is mifepristone.
  • Another commonly used abortion pill is misoprostol.
  • Mifepristone works by inhibiting the absorption of progesterone into the uterus.
  • The lack of the hormone progesterone in the uterus causes the lining of the uterus, the endometrium, to shed which leads to menstruation.
  • Mifepristone works in a three part process.
    • First step – 200 mg mifepristone is administered orally to the patient in the doctor’s office.
    • Second step – within 24 to 28 hours of oral administration, this is followed by the administration of 400mg of mifepristone in oral or suppository form.
    • Third step – the woman is examined by the doctor to make sure a complete abortion has occurred.
  • Use of mifepristone is regulated as well as restricted.
  • Mifepristone can only be used up to nine weeks after the woman’s last menstruation.
  • Mifepristone cannot be used in women who are:
    • Under 18 years or above 35 years old.
    • Epileptic
    • Diabetic
    • Suffering from heart diseases
    • Diagnosed with disorders of the lung, liver, kidney, intestine or stomach.
    • Heavy smokers
    • Taking steroids within a 12 months period
    • Using or have used an IUD
    • Using hormonal contraceptives within a period of three months prior to pregnancy
  • The danger of abortion pill is that may make abortion “easy” for many women, even the young.
  • To prevent this, the pill is only taken in a clinic under the supervision of the doctor.
  • The benefit of abortion pill is that it is a safe method of abortion and does not require the woman to undergo surgery.

  • The abortion pill is considered a medical alternative for other methods of abortion.
  • The complications of taking this abortion medications are:
    • Softening of the cervix
    • Dilation of the cervix
    • Relaxation of the uterus
    • Expulsion of the embryo
  • Use of mifepristone does have side effects. These include:
    • Various degrees of pain
    • Pelvic pain
    • Vaginal bleeding
    • Diarrhea
    • Nausea
    • Fatigue
    • Psychological side effects
