Signs Of Miscarriage At 5 & 16 Weeks: Symptoms After An Abortion

Miscarriage and missed abortion are synonymous terms used for expulsion of fetus or embryo from the womb before 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is believed that at least 20 percent of all pregnancies have risk of miscarriage before 20 weeks of gestation.

In general the signs and symptoms of miscarriage are heavy bleeding from vagina which may be bright red or dark and clotted. Cramps in abdomen, low back pain, occasionally high fever, sudden nausea and vomiting which was absent, leakage of fluids. If a pregnant woman experiences all or any of these symptoms she has to be evaluated and examined by a physician to avoid complications and infection.

Many times it is difficult to diagnose miscarriage even when there is vaginal bleeding. This is because some pregnant women may have tendency to bleed in small amount before 14 weeks. In such cases sonogram of pelvis may help to detect if the bleeding is really the result of miscarriage. Miscarriage is more obvious when there is passage of clots and low backache during early pregnancy.

Causes And Symptoms Of Miscarriage

The cause of spontaneous miscarriage often remains unknown. However, there are many suspected factors that may be responsible for abortion. Chromosomal abnormality is found to be the main reason.

Other factors that are believed to play a role in miscarriage are abnormality in cervix and uterus, hormonal deficiency, local trauma, diabetes mellitus, blood group incompatibility in couples, maternal infections such as toxoplasmosis, etc.

During the first five weeks of pregnancy, spontaneous abortions are common. These conditions are associated with prolonged bleeding which is heavier than normal menstrual bleeding. Occasionally, clot like material may also pass along with the blood. Pain may be caused due to cervical irritation. There may be mild pain in back or in pelvis region.

Miscarriage Signs And Symptoms At 5 Weeks

Miscarriage during the fifth week of pregnancy is also accompanied with the aforementioned signs of miscarriage.

Following bleeding, the mother may experience fading of symptoms of pregnancy like morning sickness, nausea etc. Severe abdominal pain may be associated with ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is pregnancy that occurs in organs other than uterus. It usually takes place in fallopian tube.

Ectopic pregnancy is a serious condition. It needs urgent medical attention. There is severe abdominal pain in ectopic pregnancy. The other signs and symptoms are rapid pulse, fall of blood pressure etc.

Symptoms Of Miscarriage Or Abortion At 16 Weeks

Late miscarriages rarely occur but it is not completely ruled out. The symptoms of miscarriage are not too different than those of miscarriage during early pregnancy. Excessive vaginal bleeding accompanied with severe abdominal pain are characteristics of miscarriage, especially during the second trimester of pregnancy.

There are large clots of blood in late miscarriages. This is accompanied with loss of sensation of the fetus moving in the abdomen. Sudden stoppage of morning sickness, tenderness in breast is experienced in abortions that occur after 16 months. Often minor operation called Dilation and curettage (D&C) may need to be done to remove the remaining parts of the dead fetus.

It is important to consult the gynecologist, immediately on observing any of the above signs and symptoms. A sonography or vaginal examination may be needed to verify the condition.
