Causes of Inflamed Uvula
When you open your mouth, you can see an appendage hanging in the back of your mouth and at the entrance of the throat. This hanging appendage is called uvula. This small hanging tongue like structure’s main function is to help you to speak and swallow food without choking.
The inflammation of uvula is called uvulitis. Causes are:
- Drinking very hot or very cold drinks can cause inflammation of uvula.
- Viral and bacterial infection can cause inflamed uvula.
- Canker sores on the uvula can cause inflamed uvula.
- Smoking and alcohol may aggravate the already inflamed condition.
- Certain medical procedures, like gastroscopy, laryngoscopy may irritate uvula. Bacterial organisms present in the mouth take advantage of this situation and cause infection and inflammation of uvula.
- Reflux esophagitis.

- Pain while swallowing food and water.
- Redness and inflammation of uvula.

- Mixture of honey and lemon will help to relieve pain and swelling of uvula.
- Drink soups having rich vitamin contents. Carrot juice and grape juice are beneficial in decreasing inflammation of uvula.
Conventional medical practitioners may use anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics to treat inflammation of uvula.
