Dental plaque comprises of accumulation of minerals and food particles which results in the formation of tartar which hardens to transform into dental plaque. Over a period of time, excessive accumulation of tartar can result in unsightly appearance of the teeth and also associated with foul odor from the mouth.

Dental plaque removal continues to remain the foremost reason for visits to the dentist.  Though there are several options like veneers or bleaching available in the dentist’s office, there are certain more simpler and easy to use at home treatment options that are equally effective.

While removing dental plaques is easy, it is crucial to take all possible precautions to protect the enamel of the tooth to ensure healthy white teeth.

Methods For Dental Plaque Removal

Here are some simple dental plaque removal methods that can be tried out at home,

  • Flossing between the teeth is considered to be one of the most effective techniques of plaque removal. Floss about three times, up and down alongside each tooth. Flossing along with gargling using a mouth wash can be very beneficial in the management of dental plaques
  • Using a dental pick try to scrap the tartar on the tooth with a help of a mirror.
    Don’t try to scrap too much, which increases the risk of injuring the enamel of the tooth. Rinse periodically while using dental pick to remove tarter
  • Spicy food is considered to be helpful in removal of dental plaque. Consuming spicy food tends to stimulate the salivary glands which in turn increase the production of saliva and help in cleansing the mouth naturally. Spicy foods however should be avoided if you suffer from gastric disturbances like gastro-esophageal reflux.
  • Local application of Tomatoes or strawberries, which are rich sources of Vitamin C is also considered beneficial. Apply it for about five minutes and then wash it off with warm water

Home Remedies For Removing Plaque On Teeth

  • Dental plaques can be removed using hydrogen peroxide or any other oral cleanser. Take 10 ml of the solution in warm water and gargle for about a few minutes. This oxygenates the surface of the teeth and looses the tartar attached to the tooth. Gargling with hydrogen peroxide diluted in warm water after every meal will help in removal of the plaque and regularly cleanse the oral cavity. Hydrogen peroxide is a corrosive substance and hence it needs to be adequately diluted before using. Also avoid swallowing the solution.
  • Mix baking soda with a pinch of salt and add a few drops of water. Use this paste to brush the teeth. Baking soda helps in removal of plaque while salt makes the oral cavity alkaline, which in turn prevents growth of bacteria in the oral cavity.
  • Rub orange peels on the teeth. With ascorbic acid helps fight bacteria and microorganisms in the oral cavity and prevents the formation of plaques on the teeth
  • Chewing an apple or a water melon about an hour after the meal helps protect the teeth and provide healthy gums.
