Fingernail Striations: Causes of Vertical Ridges On Finger Nails

  • Fingernail striations or vertical ridges on finger nails become more pronounced with advancing age. However, premature appearance of striations and ridges is an indication of deficiency. Further, studies and empirical evidence has shown that any serious ill health can result in the formation of horizontal striations or ridges along the finger nails. Cardiac disease, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, etc. have been associated with fingernail striations.

Causes of Vertical Ridges On Finger Nails

  • Fingernail striations can also be the result of an injury, caused to the nail bed like getting fingers trapped between closing doors, etc.
  • Further, there is substantial amount of evidence which is indicative of association of calcium and other mineral deficiencies with fingernail striations. Vitamin and protein deficiencies have also been linked with fingernail striations.
  • Increase the intake of milk and other diary products, eggs, whole grains, cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits. These foods are rich in various nutrients essential to overcome fingernail striations. Avoid refined foods, tinned and canned food, salts, coffee, tea, alcohol, etc.
