Asthma is a Greek word for panting. A person having asthma attack is literally panting for breath. In asthma there is inflammation and obstruction in the air passages. The muscles surrounding the air tubes of the lungs go into spasm, the mucus lining swells and the secretions buildup. Breathing becomes very difficult.

Asthma can strike at any age and to anyone. It can cause even a fit person to wheeze, cough and gasp for breath. Asthma usually occurs in attacks or episodes, in many people these episodes get flared up with seasonal changes.

This type of asthma is called seasonal asthma.

In many people asthma becomes intense and exaggerated during winter, summer, and spring seasons. For e.g. in springs, people allergic to pollens are vulnerable to an asthma attack.

Symptoms Of Seasonal Asthma

The symptoms of seasonal asthma are similar to normal asthma symptoms; the only difference is seasonal asthma gets aggravated in a particular season and remains dormant in other seasons. Following are symptoms of seasonal asthma. The triggering factor in seasonal asthma is seasonal allergy e.g. pollen allergy, in winter due to increased humidity etc.

  • Episodic breathlessness during particular season.
  • Wheezing.
  • Cough.
  • Tightness of chest.
  • Breathlessness getting worse at night and early morning.
  • Sleep disturbance due to cough and wheeze.
  • Associated symptoms like allergic rhinitis.
  • Sneezing, runny nose in springs when there are lot of pollens in air.

Signs: during an episode, following asthmatic signs are present.

  • Increased respiratory rate.
  • Ronchi during expiration, a typical sound heard through stethoscope.
  • Flaring of alae nasi.

 Seasonal Asthma Home Remedies

Those who suffer from seasonal asthma get the distressing symptoms each year. With change of season they find sudden difficulty in breathing. They usually carry the inhalers before the season starts as they know their breathing is going to be difficult.

  • Many herbs are known to reduce the intensity of seasonal asthma. Turmeric powder is one such herb beneficial in reducing the symptoms. Take half teaspoon of turmeric powder thrice in a day with water or mix it in a glass of milk.
  • Eating dry figs is known to reduce phlem produced in seasonal asthma.
  • 1 tsp of onion juice and 1 tsp of honey mixed together with a pinch of black pepper. It is effective when during the acute attack.
  • If asthma is caused due to cold air, cover your nose and mouth with a scarf in order to filter, humidify and warm the air that you breathe in.
  • Drink enough water to loosen airway secretions and maintain good hydration.
