Your tongue can get burnt out of accidentally sipping a scalding coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Eating foods that are still surprisingly hot could also burn your tongue and the insides of your mouth. Your tongue can also get burn from using mentholated toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gums, and cigarette smoking.  Although a burnt tongue does not pose a serious health risk, you still want to get immediate relief and soothe the burning sensation on your tongue.

Natural Remedies for Burnt Tongue on Hot Coffee

Getting burnt tongue on hot chocolate or some other hot beverages and food can happen to anyone once in a while so it pays a lot to know what to do the next time you get burnt tongue.

  • Stick your tongue under running water to wash away the burning sensation.
  • You can rinse your tongue with cold water with sugar and a drop of vanilla on it.
  • Apply honey on your tongue to seep out fluid from your tongue tissues.
  • Get a teaspoon with sugar on it and dip the tip of your tongue on the sugar and allow it to melt.
  • Whipped cream will also soothe your burnt tongue.
  • An ice cube on your tongue is also an effective remedy.
  • Rinsing your mouth with water mixed with salt will also do the trick of relieving you of the burning sensation.
  • Tea is also a good remedy for burnt tongue. Get two teabags and dip them on a glass of cold water. Mixing the water with fresh mint leaves will also help in soothing the pain. Get a cotton ball, dip it on the mixture and dab the cotton ball on the infected area.
  • You can also prepare a mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water then rinse your mouth with it.
  • Milk can also be used in getting rid of the pain on your tongue.

Prevention Methods

To avoid getting burnt tongue on hot food and drinks, it would be best for you to allow your drink or food to cool down a bit before attempting to drink or eat it.

Before eating your food, get a piece of it with your fork and try it to determine that its heat is just right for you. You can also spread your food on your plate to allow the heat to dissipate much quicker. You should also try the food yourself when feeding a child to ensure that the food has already cooled down.
