  • Take fibrous fruits and vegetables to help melt the mucus.

The best way to prevent chest congestion is by avoiding to get contracted with respiratory infections. Wash your hands as often as possible to get rid of viruses and bacteria.       One of the foremost things is to avoid all types of foods that you are allergic to. Food allergy causes inflammation in the air passage resulting in constriction of bronchi. At the same time secretion of mucus increases. At home you can try eliminating one food at a time for few days to determine if you are allergic to them. Some common food allergens are eggs, wheat, dairy products.
      Avoid mucus producing foods and fruits such as bananas, oranges and other citrus fruits. Eliminate sugar and white flour products. Instead test with non mucus producing food such as brown rice, and quinoa. Also avoid fermented food preparations. Avoid peanuts and sea food. Drink ample amount of water and stay hydrated. Drink warm tea and fluids as it soothes throat and relieves cough.
