Function Of Hyaluronic Acid: Deficiency Symptoms & Food Sources

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a type of substance, a carbohydrate, present abundantly in human body. It is naturally found in skin cells, connective tissue of joints and also in the vitrious of eyes. This substance is also found in blood vessel. Almost half of HA present in body is found in skin.

Hyaluronic acid has several different functions to play in the body such as retaining moisture in the skin, wound healing, lubricant and shock absorber in joints. Unfortunately, with growing age body begins to produce lesser amount of hyaluronic acid. Its production usually decreases after the age of 40.

In addition, the cumulative effect of exposure to radiation, chemicals, and other hazardous products can take its toll in synthesis of hyluronic acid.

Deficiency of hyaluronic acid can lead to several problems in body right from skin to cartilage of the joints. Fortunately, there are plethora of food which contain high amount of hyaluronic acid. Eating these foods is found extremely useful for people having its deficiency.

Symptoms Of Hyaluronic Acid Deficiency

Usually the normal person has 15 gm hyaluronic acid in his body. The highest concentration of HA is in eyes, joints and skin.

As age advances, synthesis of HA begins to decrease. Deficiency of hyluronic acid can lead to several changes in the body organs. It can lead to problems in joint as the cartilage present in joint contains hyaluronic acid.

  • Cartilage acts as a cushion between the bones of joints. It protects friction between two bones in a joint. Deficiency of HA gradually degrades the cartilage and it becomes thin, leading to osteoarthritis of joint. Patients suffering from osteoarthritis often find relief in joint pain and stiffness after taking supplements of hyluronic acid.
  • Hyluronic is present in the vitreous fluid of the eye. Vitreous provides shape to the eyes. Deficiency of HA can lead to dry and itching eyes, besides affecting the eyesight.
  • Large amount of HA is present in skin cells. The skin remains supple and smooth because of moisture retaining ability of hyaluronic acid. Deficiency of hyaluronic acid can affect skin texture. It can become dry and itchy. The skin may appear prematurely wrinkled and aged. Hyluronic also helps in regeneration of newer skin cells. It enhances wound healing.
  • Gums are made up of fibrous tissue. It helps to keep the teeth secure to the jawbone. The fibrous tissue contains HA which helps the gums to maintain its health. With less amount of HA, the gums may become weak and bleed easily.

Food Sources Of Hyaluronic Acid

There are several foods which contain hyaluronic acid or at least encourage the body cells to produce more HA.

Hyaluronic acid is found densely in connective tissue of animals. Eating connective tissue of animals is a rich source of hyaluronic acid. Chicken comb contains high amount of hyaluronic acid.

In our body, for synthesis of HA, it requires magnesium. Eat food rich in magnesium to increase production of HA. Vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, beans, broccoli and fruits such as banana, apple, oranges, pineapple, strawberry, peaches, and papaya all contain magnesium. Almonds and peanuts are also good source of magnesium.

The other good sources of hyaluronic acid are; oysters, shell fish, animal liver, eggs, soybeans, brown rice, pumpkin seeds, and yeast.
