Glomerulonephritis refers to a condition which is characterized by a collection of disorders that are responsible for damaging the glomeruli of the kidneys. The glomeruli play a crucial role in filtering the blood and blood purification. Glomerulonephritis is classified in to acute and chronic conditions.

Chronic Glomerulonephritis refers to slow and insidious onset of glumeruli disease which may not be associated with symptoms, but can eventually result in kidney failure. There are certain dietary recommendations that can help manage the condition effectively. It is however always necessary to consult your physician before using any dietary modifications.

As per the National Kidney Foundation, Chronic Glumerulonephritis is a condition which is associated with a wide range of symptoms and complications. There are certain factors that can increase the risk of the development of the condition,

  • Diabetes is considered to be the primary cause for the development of the condition.
  • History of cancers can also result in the manifestation of the condition in some individuals.
  • Bacterial endocarditis and recurrent urinary tract infection can result in the development of the condition.
  • Kidney disorders like formation of cysts or kidney stones can also result in glumeruli disease in adults.

The symptoms include: swelling in the dependent parts of the body, primarily the extremities. In addition the condition is associated with symptoms like abdominal discomfort, joint pain, and muscle ache along with bloody and foamy urine.

Diet For Chronic Glomerulonephritis

There are certain dietary recommendations that are useful in the management of kidney disease in general and glomeruli disease in particular.

  • Ensure that your diet comprises of raw foods. Certain foods that are beneficial in the management of the chronic glomerulonephritis include parsley, papaya, potatoes, asparagus, bananas, cucumbers and celery.
  • Legumes and seeds are also considered highly beneficial.
  • Limit the intake of foods such as chocolate, eggs, spinach, especially if the potassium levels in the body are high.
  • Soybeans have been identified as the most useful foods in the management of glomerulonephritis. Soy contains a high concentration of amino acid arginine, which is considered useful for the kidney. In addition soy contains manganese, iron, vitamin K, copper, magnesium and phosphorus. Soy also contains a high concentration of protein, omega 3 fatty acids and dietary fiber. It helps maintain a healthy body weight and also regulates the blood sugar levels.

Complications Of Chronic Glomerulonephritis

Some of the common complications linked to chronic glumerulonephritis include:

  • Malignant hypertension: This condition is characterized by elevated levels of blood pressure primarily due to failure of the renin angiotensin system of the kidney, which plays a crucial role in regulating normal blood pressure in the body.
  • Recurrent and chronic urinary tract infection is a common complication associated with the glumerulonephritis, due to failure of the kidneys to flush the renal system.
  • Fluids overload is another common complication, which is associated with accumulation of fluids and edema in the extremities and the face.
  • The individual tends to be prone to other infections due to an inadequate functioning of the kidneys.
  • End stage renal disease is a last stage complication associated with chronic glumerulonephritis. End stage renal disease is typified by renal failure, in which the kidneys completely fail to purify the blood. Dialysis therapy is recommended in such cases to increase life expectancy.
