What Is Computer Fatigue Syndrome?
In 1999, OSHA identified the various health hazards associated with sitting in front of the computer screen.Computer Vision Syndrome was the term used to define the condition. As per estimate almost ninety percent of 70 million American workers spending more than three hours in front of the computer screen each day suffer from this problem.
The primary symptoms of the syndrome are associated with visual disturbances, inability to refocus the eye, double vision and dryness and irritation of the eye. However in addition to these symptoms, individuals suffering the computer fatigue syndrome may also experience low levels of energy, generalized weakness and fatigue and neck and lower back pain.
Humans have evolved over millions of years. Our ancestors were hunters and living in forests and their eyes were designed to see objects located at a distance. Similarly our bodies were designed to move. A desk bound job tends to reduce the ability of the eye to look at objects located at a distance and limits the natural movement of the body, which in turn is responsible for lower energy levels and body pain.
Causes Of Computer Screen Fatigue
The common causes associated with computer fatigue syndrome include,
- Spending prolonged periods of time on focusing at a short distance. Looking at a computer screen reduces the ability of the eyes to focus on distant objects which may result in fatigue of the eye muscles.
- Reduced average blinking time can also cause eye strain and fatigue. Ensure that you blink frequently and repeatedly.
- Poor lighting and poor posture can also result in computer associated fatigue.
- Excessive glare can cause computer fatigue, especially when the surrounding environment is bright.
- Starchy diet is also considered to be partially responsible for computer fatigue syndrome.
Treatment For Computer Fatigue Syndrome
The treatment of computer fatigue syndrome is comprises of dietary management along with eye exercises.
- Increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Reduce the intake of refined and processed foods. Avoid fatty and oily food as they tend to reduce the energy levels and may contribute to chronic fatigue.
- Take frequent breaks, a short break of five minutes every half an hour is beneficial and blink frequently.
- Eye drops especially those comprising of Euphrasia and Agaricus are beneficial. They help in reducing burning pain in the eye and also manage dry eye problems.
- Ergonomically correct posture plays a crucial role in management of computer fatigue syndrome. Your spine should be erect and the position of your eye should be in line with the computer screen. Your shoulders should not be bent but rather at a right angle from the keypad.
