Swollen Nasal Passages
Swollen nasal passage is very commonly seen in people who suffer from sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and recurrent flu.
The nasal passage gets inflamed, swollen and produces a range of symptoms.
Swollen Nasal Passages Causes
- Sinusitis is the commonest cause. The sinuses filter the dust particles from the inhaled air. The mucus membrane of each sinus moistens the nose and shields the lungs from infective agents. When the sinuses get inflamed / infected, it is associated with a swelling of the nasal passages.
- Allergens like pollen, dust, dander, etc. also cause an inflammation.
- Allergies are another major causative factor.
- Unnecessary use of nasal sprays results in nasal swelling.

- If your condition is due to an allergy, it is very essential that you find out the exact offending agent and steadily avoid it. Protect yourself from dust, smoke, fur, pollen, etc., and avoid eating processed foods. The physician may prescribe anti-histamines to handle the allergy.
- Steam inhalation is an effective way to treat swollen nasal passages. Add 2 – 3 cloves or a few drops of eucalyptus oil to boiling water. Inhale for about 5 minutes. This helps thin out the phlegm and eases breathing.
- Drinking mint tea regularly helps manage swollen nasal passages and its symptoms successfully. Mint exerts decongestant properties, checks inflammation and swelling and boosts immune mechanism as well.
- Pranayama is another wonderful and very effective technique. It eases breathing and increases lung capacity.
