Collagen comprises of protein cells which are found of the skin, which are responsible for the smoothness and fullness of skin tissue. In addition, collagen is also found in internal organs, tendons, cartilage, muscle tissue and teeth to varying degrees.

There are 20 different types of collagen tissues found in the body with 25 percent of all proteins comprising of collagen.  Reduced collagen production in the skin results in wrinkle and sagging of the skin. Deficiency of collagen may result in a wide range of problems and symptoms

Causes And Symptoms Of Collagen Deficiency

There are several causes for collagen degeneration and deficiency.

Collagen deficiency may occur naturally as a part of the aging process.

In addition certain connective tissue disorders have been found to be associated with the deficiency of collagen which includes rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, rheumatic fever, etc.

Symptoms: The presentation of the symptoms depends upon the type of collagen tissue which is involved. In case of involvement of skin collagen, symptoms would include sagging of the skin, wrinkles and tendency to scar easily. In case of deficiency of collagen in the muscles, it is associated with joint pain, muscle weakness and soreness.

Treatment For Deficiency Of Collagen

There are different treatment options for collagen deficiency. Collagen injections are used for management of wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Injections are prepared using cadaver derived or purified animal collagen.

Alternatively collagen supplements may also be used which are available in pill or liquid forms. Further use of other supplements like Zinc, bioflavonoid and Vitamin C also play a crucial role in the production of collagen
