Low White Blood Count Causes: Treatment For Low Leukocyte Levels

White blood cell is one of the component of blood, the other being red blood cells, platelets and fibrin etc. the function of white blood is to protect the body against external infective organisms, such as bacteria, viruses and fungus.

White blood cells are also known as leucocytes, they are categorized into neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes, and basophils. The normal value of white cells in our body is between 4000 to 10,000/mm3.

Below the count of 4000 of white blood cells, is classed as leucopenia.

Causes of low white cell count in the blood:

  • Aplastic anemia.

  • Liver and spleen disease.
  • Chemotherapy therapy
  • Radiation.
  • Deficiency of vitamins and minerals such as zinc and copper.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs used in kidney transplant.
  • Bone marrow diseases.
  • Idiopathic (cause not known).

Symptoms Of Low White Blood Count

  • Fever.
  • Cold, sneezing and cough.
  • Sore throat.
  • Diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
  • Mouth sores and canker sores.

Low white blood cell count can only be confirmed after laboratory blood examination.

Treatment For Low White Blood Cell Count

  • To treat the cause such as typhoid will increase low blood cell count.
  • Antibacterial and antiviral drugs will specifically focus on the organism and kill them. This will help the low blood cell count to rise.
  • Green tea will also help to increase white blood count. It contains an antioxidant catechin which increase the count.
  • Protein containing food and zinc also help to bring low blood count to normal.
