Iron is an important mineral required by the body, it is a part of hemoglobin which carries oxygen to the muscles and tissues for their nourishment.

Depletion of iron in the body gives rise to fatigue and weakness. The concentration of hemoglobin in the blood falls below the normal level, when there is iron deficiency. The condition is called as iron deficiency anemia.

The absorbable form of iron which is also called as heme iron is present in meat, liver, fish, poultry. Non heme iron is found in green leafy vegetables, dried fruits, food cooked in iron utensils.

The iron store in vegetarians is less compared to persons eating non vegetarian food. This is because the iron present is vegetarian diet is somewhat less absorbed. Lack of iron in the diet alone is not the only cause of iron deficiency, the underlying cause such as excessive menstruation, bleeding piles, pregnancy, parasitic infestation can also give rise to iron deficiency.

In such condition medicinal iron is also given besides diet rich in iron. Ferrous sulfate is a salt of iron which is effective in treating iron deficiency anemia.

It is easily absorbed in the intestine. Ferrous sulfate is less expensive than other iron salt. It is known to cause intolerance in some individuals, such as constipation, nausea and bloating. Therefore ferrous sulfate preparation should be taken only after meals. Side effects of feosol may also be reduced with sustained release preparation or gradually titrating the dose of ferrous sulfate.

Foods that interfere in ferrous sulfate absorption when a person is suffering from iron deficiency anemia should be avoided. These foods are green tea, coffee, phytate in wheat products such as matzoh, pita, oats, nuts, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Calcium supplement is also known to interfere with heme iron absorption.
