Boron deficiency is attributed to poor dietary intake of boron which results in osteoporosis, especially among women. The symptoms of boron deficiency include,
- Decrease in the levels of ionized calcium and calcitonin, which may result in osteoporosis or brittle bones
- Overall increase in calcium levels which results in excretion of calcium through urine. This can also manifest in the form of renal or bladder stones due to high concentration of calcium in urine
- Deficiency of boron tends to interfere with bone anabolism, which results in suppressed growth rates, especially when deficiency of boron is associated with deficiency of magnesium
- Deficiency of boron is also associated with impaired mental functions and depressed levels of mental alertness
