Symptoms Of Jittery Feeling: What Causes It & How To Stop It?

Most people sometime or the other may have experienced feeling jittery. It is type of feeling nervous and anxious or a wired sensation of butterflies in stomach. This jumpy and tense moment is often felt by students when they appear for tests or a viva. The same is the case among adults when they prepare for an interview.

Feeling jittery is initial biological response to a situation that makes you tensed and anxious. You may also develop associated symptoms such as rapid heart rate, warm feeling, perspiration etc. Feeling shaky and fidgety usually develops from the psychological state of mind.

But jittery feeling can also develop as a consequence of a medical illness.

Some people are unable to demonstrate the exact feeling that occurs inside them. Consult your physician if you are concerned of this abnormal feeling or if the condition persists frequently and for long period.

What Causes You To Feel Jittery Inside?

Feeling jittery can be due to many causes. Some of them are related to psychological conditions while some of them may develop as a result of medical ailment. Certain lifestyle factors are also to be blamed when you feel jittery.

For instance drinking too much of caffeinated drinks or smoking cigarettes can act as a stimulant to the nerves, which in excess can produce jitters. Certain other external factors can make you feel tremble. Medications especially blood pressure medicines, antidepressants are known to cause shaky and jittery feeling.

Hypoglycemia is one medical condition which can make you feel jittery. Hypoglycemia is a condition that occurs when there is drop in the blood sugar level. Non diabetic people may develop this when they are fasting or eating less or after drinking too much of alcohol. Hypoglycemia in diabetics usually occurs due to anti-diabetic drugs or due to over dose of insulin. A hypoglycemic person feels nervous, exhausted, confused, hungry, dizzy which is accompanied with jittery feeling.

Patient suffering from hypotension or low blood pressure may also feel fidgety and nervous. When the blood pressure drops too low that is 80/60 mm of hg, patient may experience some unusual feeling. The symptoms of hypotension include feeling jittery, blurring of vision, skin pallor, rapid and shallow breathing, confusion, tiredness etc.

Emotional causes are also known to cause jittery feeling. Anxiety, nervousness, fears can make a person feel jittery and shaky. Such people may experience other symptoms as well such as dizziness, weakness, perspiration, shallow breathing, rapid pulse, numbness all over body, and butterflies in the abdomen. People suffering from different phobias often feel jittery when they have to face certain situations.

Phobia is defined as fear is not rational. It can be fear of anything such as space, object, or exposure to particular situation. For example a person may have irrational fear for heights or flowing water, or thunderstorm etc. Exposure to such situation can cause jittery feeling with rapid heartbeat, sweating, rapid breathing, etc. These feelings are often since childhood days which may extend even when the person becomes adult.

Trembling and jitteriness can occur even for a temporary period in certain situations such as after performing strenuous exercise, during pregnancy as a result of hormonal changes, or use of certain anti depressants and steroids for a long period.

How To Stop Feeling Jittery?

If the underlying cause of jittery and nervous feeling is related to increased intake of coffee or caffeinated drinks, or due to reduced diet you have to alter the habit. Take proper food at right time and avoid fasting for long hours. Avoid too much of coffee.

Certain medical causes are also responsible for this feeling. Talk to your doctor regarding the abnormal feeling. He will change the prescribed medication or may reduce the dose accordingly.

In case of emotional and psychological problems, psychotherapy and counseling are useful tools that will help to reduce this discomforting sensation. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation are beneficial when the cause is anxiety and fear.
