Acne is a skin condition characterized by variety of pimples in the form of whiteheads and blackheads. Acne and pimples are usually present on face, neck, back and upper body area. It usually develops during teenage but sometimes it may also occur later in life. Some foods are suspected to trigger acne breakouts.

Chocolate, one of the most adorable foods is considered to trigger breakouts if you are prone to develop acne. However, its occurrence may vary from person to person. Sugar and fat content in chocolate is to be blamed to trigger it.

One of the best ways to prevent acne is to eliminate chocolate from your diet, if you suspect it to be the underlying cause.

What Causes Acne And Pimples?

The basic cause for acne formation is increased production of oil in the sebaceous gland. Accumulation of dirt and dead skin cells block the oversized oil glands. Bacteria present on skin surface may enter into the gland leading to more severe form of acne and pimple. There are several factors that may have an implication in development of acne and pimples.

Too much of oily skin, accumulation of dead skin cells, hormonal play and inflammatory process all are known to cause acne or make them worse.

Contrary to the belief, chocolate per se is not the cause for acne. However, some foods including chocolate can trigger certain factors that are responsible for acne formation. These foods can increase production of sebum in the oil glands as well as inflammation.

How Does Chocolate Cause Acne And Pimples?

Chocolate is one of the most popular food items that is widely eaten as a delicious decadent sweet. Chocolate is made from cacao seeds. Most people single out chocolate to be a cause of acne and zits. However, chocolate in itself is not responsible for acne. But the sugar and fat content in chocolate is said to trigger acne. Both sugar and fat in chocolate can increase production of oil in the sebaceous glands. Both can also promote the inflammatory response of the body. All this can lead to acne development.

Sugar and saturated fat both can raise the level of insulin in the body. As a result the internal mechanism of the body produces an inflammatory response which can worsen acne in people who are prone to it. Also milk chocolate and dairy chocolate which contain milk and sugar are more to blame than dark chocolate. Dark chocolates are lesser to be blamed because they contain antioxidants and flavanoids in high amount as compared to milk chocolates. In fact the antioxidants present in dark chocolate helps to protect the cells from free radicals.

Often some women like to eat sweets, especially chocolates during the premenstrual period. Women who are prone to develop acne may suffer from breakouts during this period. It is simply a coincidence between development of breakouts and that of eating chocolates. Actually during this period, the estrogen hormone level plunges causing rise in androgen level. This hormone triggers increase of oil production in the oil glands. Thus it may be changes in the hormones during menstrual cycle and not chocolate that may be responsible for acne and pimples in many women.

How To Prevent Acne And Pimples?

Although chocolate in itself is not to be blamed for causing acne, presence of sugar and saturated fats in it may become triggers among those prone to develop acne. The best way is to avoid eating chocolates if a person is sure the cause of acne is chocolate.

However, abstaining chocolate alone may not bring improvement in some people. There are other foods such as dairy products, sugar, meat and other foods that may increase the possibility of pimples. Thus you need keep a diary to track which food is the culprit.
