Will Hormone Therapy Help In Facial Hair Growth In Men?

Facial hair is one of the most practical tools for men to discern their masculine identity. Since time immemorial healthy growth of hair on men’s face is interpreted as sign of strength and virility. Normally all boys have soft and light hair on the area of beard and moustache which are not apparent from distance. They are called vellus hair. However, during puberty between 12 to 17 years of age many changes occur in the body, including change in pattern of hair on face. The facial hair becomes thick, coarse and dark.

All the changes are due to rise of certain hormones in male body, prominently the male hormone called testosterone and to lesser extent DHT, thyroid hormone, etc. At the time of puberty, testosterone hormone acts on the hair roots of face and other parts of body. There is an increased supply of blood in hair roots leading to darker, faster and stronger growth of hair.

However, in some males factors such as low testosterone level and hereditary factors can reduce hair growth on face. In such instances hormone therapy is helpful to enhance growth of facial hair.

Reasons For Less Facial Hair Growth In Men

One of the main reasons for less hair growth on face in men is deficiency of male hormone testosterone. This hormone is produced by testes. The hypothalamus releases certain hormones which trigger secretion of testosterone from the testes in males. So disease related to hypothalamus or testes can affect the production of male hormone. Subsequently there is delay or absence of pubertal symptoms including growth of hair on face.

Congenital defects of testes, tumor in pituitary gland, infections such as mumps can affect production of hormones that influence growth of hair on face and moustache. Often smoking, alcoholism, or even stress can lead to lower secretion of male hormone.

Sometimes the hair roots are resistant to testosterone which may hinder growth of hair. Certain medications, especially those used to for chemotherapy in cancer patients are known to have counter effect on body hair.

Eat eggs, oily fish, meat, broccoli, spinach, oysters, almonds, bone broth etc as they are rich source of vitamins and minerals. Fruits contain vitamin C which is also useful for overall well being of a person. Quit smoking and drinking alcohol as both are known to affect production of testosterone hormone. Smoking also depletes many vitamins due to increase in free radicals.
