How to Increase Platelet Count: Treat Thrombocytopenia (Low Platelet Count)

Question: I’d bruises and took blood test. Doctor assumed, I was anemic but I’d low platelets. Now I’m taking blood tests every week and platelet counts keep on going up and down. Is there a way to increase platelets count faster?

Treatment to Increase Platelet Count

The condition when your Platelet count falls below 150,000 is called Thrombocytopenia (i.e. low platelet count). If you are suffering from thrombocytopenia and want to increase platelet count naturally, here are some suggestions that you should follow:

  • Avoid all refined food stuffs including sugars, saturated fats, processed foods and grains, aerated drinks.
These foods are known causes of platelet count fall.
  • Consume a lot of healthy food. This includes fresh and organic foods. This will help in stimulating the body’s internal mechanism and increase your platelet count.
  • Ensure that you thoroughly wash you wash raw food before consuming them as helminthes, parasites and viruses are known to cause a fall in the platelet count.
  • Use cod liver oil or flax seed oils. They strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, improve circulation and increase your ratio of HDL (High Density Lipoproteins) to LDL (Low Density Lipoproteins).
  • Tomatoes and berries are loaded with vitamins and minerals and have strong anti-oxidant qualities which will help you increase platelet count.
  • Consume a lot of green and leafy vegetables. It increases the hemoglobin level of blood and helps tackle the underlying cause of low levels of platelet count.
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements taken regularly, will also enhance your immunity and ability to fit diseases that may aggravate fall in platelet count.

Question: I have been diagnosed with a low platelet count. It is 83,000, but I’m perfectly fine. I do all my day’s work and feel bit fatigued by the end of the day.  My

  • Mean platelet volume is 9.9
  • RBC is 5.71
  • Hemoglobin is 17.7
  • Total WBC – 9400
  • Polymorphs-55%
  • Lymphocytes-30%
  • Eosinophilis-8%

Can you please suggest a treatment?

Answer:

Platelets are a constituent of the blood and promote clotting of blood, which is essential for hemostatis and prevents undue blood loss following trauma or injury. Ideal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microlitre of blood. If the platelet count falls below 150,000 it is referred to as Thrombocytopenia (i.e. low platelet count).  There are several causes of thrombocytopenia some of the common causes include,

  • Aplastic or Megaloblastic Anemia
  • Chronic Alcoholism
  • Viral infection or sepsis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Immune disorders
  • Hematological malignancies
  • Chemotherapy

There is no serious risk of bleeding until the platelet count falls very low to 10000 to 20000 platelets per microlitre. Occasionally bleeding is observed with a count less than 50,000 platelets per microlitre. The duration of thrombocytopenia will depend upon the cause and may range from a few days to years.

Raise Low Platelet Count, Recovering from Thrombocytopenia

  • Management depends upon the cause. You suffer from mild thrombocytopenia and no treatment is required for the same.
  • If you suffer from serious bleeding you may require blood or platelet transfusion and occasionally removal of the spleen.
  • You could try homeopathic remedy to increase platelet count – Mellifolium 30, 8 pills twice a day. It will help you improve platelet count and avert bleeding.

For psoriasis prepare an apple cider vinegar compress, add 1 cup apple cider vinegar to 1 gallon water. Soak a soft cotton cloth in the mixture and apply it to the skin to ease itching.

For increasing platelet count there are no specific diet or vitamins. You can try to increase intake of drumstick leaves, fenugreek leaves, Bengal green gram, liver, egg yolk, citrus fruits and Indian gooseberry (Indian gooseberry).

My father is 66 years old and has diabetes. He is suffering from low platelet count >3000. Actually doctor said that body creates platelets but it’s rupturing inside. We once gave him platelets from outside, like you give blood from a bottle. The count did go up, but it reduced again.

There are homeopathic remedies for increasing platelet count, as was mentioned above. There are also many natural remedies which many have found to be successful–papaya leaf extract, pure papaya juice, etc.

Also Vitamin C helps to increase platelets. He could take 1000mg daily (along with other vitamins: a full B complex, E and D) and that would replenish a lot of what the body needs to function properly.

If you do some research you can find all kinds of other natural remedies which are easier on the body than traditional medicine.

Your baby requires a treatment on war footing, I suppose he is in Icu facility, the underlying cause for low platelet count should be found out, which the doctors attending may be trying hard to get it. Mean while leave on the doctors to do their best as in these condition, a close watch on the patient is required, as there are lot of changes occurring in his system, and individual approach is needed to treat the patient.

Platelets so low sometimes respond to prescription Vitamin K – but check with your Doctor to avoid possibility of blood clots. Also – check out organic foods high in Vitamin K
Avoid INSAIDS – Watch out for foods with Vitamin E –
    * Cod liver oil – as they can put your at risk for bleeding.
Always – check with your Dr. Best to all – 🙂

Normal Platelet count is 150000 to 500000. If it falls below 50,000 platelet transfusions is required. If you have any other condition like pin point red spots on legs it can be a sign of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), A Blood test for platelet antibody can confirm ITP.

Eat foods that are rich in various nutrients. Eat vitamin C rich food. Fruits and vegetables are rich source of this vitamin. Eat almonds, walnuts, salmon fish, and flax seeds. They all are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. It boosts platelet count. Tomato, cherry is loaded with antioxidants. Both are good to increase low platelet count.

Being in medical profession you may know what dengue fever is. The causative organism is a virus. There is no specific medicine that targets the virus. The mainstay treatment is pediatric consultation, careful observation and if necessary hospitalization to maintain the body fluids.
