Some Primary Causes of Upper Abdominal Pain and Its Natural Remedies

You may have been wondering what the pain in your left upper abdomen means. Just by pointing at it, you would not immediately be able to identify what the problem is because there are a lot of internal organs that is housed by the upper left part of the abdomen.

Pain in the left upper abdomen occurs just exactly where it is said: in the left upper portion of the abdomen. Drawing a left line from the left nipple up to the area in line with the umbilicus or the belly button, this is where the pain initiates.

This area is what is called the left upper abdominal quadrant.

The heart lies still just above this area. The organs on this area include the spleen, part of the large intestines or the bowel, part of the pancreas, part of the stomach, the left lower ribs, the left kidney, top portion of the left ureter, a tip of the left lung, and the left part of the adrenal gland.

The aorta, the largest blood vessel that distributes blood to all parts of the body, passes on the midline of this area. The aorta nestles in this area when it becomes distended due to aortic aneurysm.

Malfunction in any of these organs would lead to the pain in the area.

Abdominal Pain Causes

There are a number of reasons why pain will be experienced in the left upper abdominal quadrant and they are the following:

  • Pyelonephritis or Infection of the Left Kidneys
  • Coastochondritis Infection in the Lower Left Rib
  • Spleen Injury or Tumor in the Spleen
  • Stomach Ulcer or Tumor

  • Tumor in the Left Kidney
  • Stones in the Left Ureter
  • Inflammation of the Left Bowel
  • Trapped Wind
  • Disease on the Adrenal Glands
  • Pneumonia affecting the Left Lung
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Treatment for Mild Stomach Pain

  • The cure for pain in the left upper abdomen would depend on what is causing the pain. However, if mild pain is experienced, these remedies might help to reduce or stop the pain:
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids.
  • If the pain occurs after meals, antacids might be a relief. Avoid acidic or fatty food and carbonated or caffeinated beverages.
  • Take medicines for pain like Tylenol. Do not take ibuprofen, aspirin, or any kind of anti-inflammatory medicines unless a doctor prescribes them.
