In this busy world and in today’s scenario, glucose intolerance in people is multiplying to a large extent, but with greater management skills, glucose intolerance can be brought under control to great extent if the person understands the symptoms at the beginning of its occurrence.

What Is Glucose Intolerance?

Now let us understand about glucose intolerance, it is a condition which many medical authorities refer to as a pre- diabetes condition. In normal circumstances after eating food, the glucose level in our blood increases due to sugar and carbohydrate in our diet. The pancreas gets a message and they release insulin a hormone, which helps the glucose to turn it into energy by facilitating its absorption in tissue and its cells.

Thus after some time of eating, the glucose level will come down to normal. But in glucose intolerance insulin is produced less or supplied less from the pancreas, this causes glucose to get accumulated in the blood stream, it does not mean that the person is diabetic.

Difference Between Glucose Intolerance And Diabetes

Now the difference between glucose intolerance and full blown diabetes is that, the increase of glucose level is not as high as in a diabetic patient, but at a borderline on a higher side. If in this stage a person takes care, his type 2 diabetes can be delayed for many years.

Glucose Intolerance Symptoms

Symptoms of glucose intolerance should therefore be understood and conveyed to your doctor, who will check your blood glucose level to determine the condition.

  • Feeling of abnormal thirst.
  • Excessive perspiration, disproportionate to work.
  • Tingling numbness
  • Excessive feeling of hunger.
  • Cramps in muscles like calf muscles.
  • Fatigue and weakness after minimum work.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Rapid and excessive weight loss.

Diet And Treatment For Glucose Intolerance

Glucose intolerance diet and treatment:

  • Restrict sugar intake.
  • Chocolates, ice-cream etc should be curtailed to a minimum.
  • Whole grains, lean meat, fish, fruits and vegetables are supposed to be a good diet in glucose intolerant persons.
  • Biscuits, pancakes, instant potatoes, breakfast drinks should be avoided.
  • Milk and dairy products should be consumed in lesser quantity.
  • Exercise such as daily brisk walk for 30 minutes, yoga and meditation will go a long way to reduce glucose intolerance.
