Excessive Head Sweating In Children While Sleeping: Causes, Remedies

Children are more likely to experience sweating on the head because of their daily physical activities. But when a child is inactive and yet suffers from excessive sweating, it is time to consult a doctor.

Overactive sweat glands can be a genetic disorder that can prevent the body’s normal hydration. Often called primary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating entails a malfunction in sending incorrect signals to the brain that the body feels hot, even while at rest.

Areas like the neck, scalp, palms and feet can also experience excessive perspiration.

Children can also suffer from night sweats during their sleep, mostly caused by too much layers of clothing.

It can also be due to other conditions.

  • Nightmares or immersing into a dream-like state can be a frightening prospect for a child, causing stress or fear that results to sweating.
  • Excessive sweating can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
  • Some medications can also cause perspiration or serious illnesses like hyperactive thyroid, diabetes, asthma and some types of cancer.
  • Cerebral palsy that may have developed during birth
  • Other causes include fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases.
  • Other symptoms that may accompany night sweats in children include fever, diarrhea, constant fatigue and weight loss.

Causes And Remedies For Head Sweating In Children

  • Profuse sweating in the head can be a sign of changes in hormonal functions, especially if the child experiences the start of puberty.
  • Hyperhidrosis can mask underlying heart conditions, but must be ruled out through observation of other symptoms like weight loss, heavy breathing and coughing.
  • Doctors may prescribe using antiperspirants for the scalp and neck.
  • Some foods may be stimulating the sweat glands. Eliminate the possibilities by keeping track of what the child eats. After identifying the possible cause, avoid that particular food.
  • Reduce the chances of intense temperature changes by having the child wear light fabrics and keeping the hair short.
  • Teach the child proper ways in maintaining personal hygiene.
  • If the excessive weight is due to weight management, reduce weight but maintain healthy diets.
  • Guide the child in eating more fruits because of the natural cooling effects with which fruits provide the body.
  • Create a more relaxed environment for the child to stop the excessive sweating. Trying gentle yoga and meditation may also help the child to become more at ease.
