Microfracture knee surgery has become famous arthroscopic surgical procedure among sports persons in recent times. The surgery is done when the cartilage or the inner side of the knee cap is minimally damaged.
Microfracture Knee Surgery
The surgery can avoid partial or total knee joint replacement. It is also used to reduce pain in the knee due to injured cartilage.
In this surgery the surgeon makes small holes called microfracture in the bone near the damaged cartilage. A new cartilage develops from these microfractures in the bone. It replaces the damaged one.
Microsurgery is technically easy to perform and needs 30 to 90 minutes. It is a minimally invasive surgery. But the harder part is the recovery stage for first four to six weeks.
Knee Microfracture Surgery Recovery
The recovery period taken for microfracture surgery is slow; it should not be hurried with rigorous approach. This is because the new joint cartilage that is trying to grow is very fragile. For its full growth, solid consistency and durability, it needs care or else it will get damaged and break.
After the operation physical therapy may begin in the recovery room or after some time. Passive motion machine is used to gently exercise the legs for few weeks.
Knee Microfracture Rehabilitation
The exercise done on passive motion machine helps to regain full flexibility and motion of the knee joint.
The person will need crutches to keep his weight off from the knee joint. Usually the person can return to his sports activities after 6 to 8 months. It depends on individual recovery status.
The success rate is better when it is done on a patient below the age of 40 yrs. The success rate is promising when the injury is of recent origin and the cartilage damage is minimal.
