Gout is a form of arthritis which results due to excessive accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint and psoriatic arthritis is a complication arising among people who suffer from psoriasis a skin disease.

When we talk about red wine and arthritis, we are dealing with rheumatoid arthritis.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. In this disease the immune system of the body attacks the synovium, the lining around the joint. Over a period of time, it becomes thick and destroys the cartilage. Cartilage is a thin sheet between two bones in a joint. It helps to reduce the bone friction and maintains good joint flexibility.

Once the cartilage is damaged, the bones rub against one another giving rise to joint inflammation, pain and fluid in the joint.

Women are more affected with this disease as compared to men. It is common in people between 40 to 60 years.  People having rheumatoid arthritis are also at risk of suffering from osteoporosis as well as lung and heart related illnesses.

Does Red Wine Help In Rheumatoid Arthritis?

How does red wine help people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis?

Red wine is made from dark colored grapes, usually black grapes. The color of wine may slightly differ according to its age and maturity. It is slightly violet, brick red or brown. The color of red wine actually comes from the anthocyan pigments present in the grape skin.

According to researchers, it was found that people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis have less pain and swelling in their joint when they consumed small amount of red wine daily as compared to their counter parts who did not consume red wine. It was also found that people who drank moderate amount of red wine daily were less likely to suffer from diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. They even noted that it is more effective when consumed regularly.

The benefit of red wine in arthritis patient is due to presence of antioxidant compound called resveratrol. The anti inflammatory property of resveratrol is responsible for reducing swelling and pain of rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis pain is mainly due to inflammation in the joints.

Besides, in animal studies it has been found that resveratrol present in red wine prevents cartilage destruction. It reduces the inflammation of synovium and thus less destruction of cartilage.

Is Red Wine Good Or Bad For Arthritis?

Even if the research in its primary stage suggests promising results, red wine is not considered as a treatment of choice for treating rheumatoid arthritis. This is because; the alcohol present in wine may interact with other medicine which the patient is consuming either for arthritis or for any other disease.

The other reason is possibility of accidents and fall. Patient may get intoxicated after drinking large quantity of red wine and this may lead to fall and bone fracture. As such the bones have turned brittle in patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

Considering the above factors it is necessary for the patient to consult his doctor and find out whether red wine is beneficial for him.
