Symptoms Of Hormonal Headaches: Causes And Treatment Options

Headache is the most common ailment all over the world. Almost everyone sometime in their life must have experienced this discomforting condition. There are numerous causes responsible for headache. It may range from mild cause such as over straining of eyes to more severe such as brain tumor. Hormonal headache is a type of headache caused due to fluctuation of hormones in the body.

Hormone related headache is more common in women especially before and during their menstrual periods. The level of hormones, mainly the female hormone estrogen and progesterone changes during menstrual cycle, menopause and even in pregnancy.

Hormonal headaches are similar to migraine headaches. There are wide variety of home remedies and medications to relieve hormonal headaches.

What Causes Hormonal Headaches?

At least 60 to 70 percent women with headaches give history of its association with menstruation. Many women who are in their premenopause or menopause stage also have frequent headaches that are similar in nature with migraine.

Primarily hormonal headaches that are common in woman occur due to a drop in the level of estrogen hormone. The chemical in brain which is instrumental in controlling pain is controlled by estrogen hormone.

There are many women who experience headache before or during menses. Factors responsible for it are;

  • Drop in estrogen level before and during menses. Similarly women in their menopause have low estrogen level. It makes them more vulnerable for hormonal headache.
  • Hormone related headaches surprisingly reduce in pregnancy. But in some women headaches may continue to occur during the first three months. They disappear after three months.
  • Both men as well as women suffer from headaches if there is imbalance in thyroid hormone.
  • Skipping meals, poor diet and malnourishment all can change the hormonal essay in a person. This can be a triggering cause for headache related to change in hormones.
  • This type of headache is also common in woman taking hormone replacement therapy.

Signs And Symptoms Of Hormonal Headaches

The hormone level varies in every woman; therefore the severity of headache, its progression, frequency is unique. The symptoms may differ from one person to another. Hormonal headaches have more similarity with migraine headache. Here are some of the characteristic features:

  • Hormonal headache mainly in women begin few day before the menses or during the menses.
  • This type of headaches are one sided. They occur on right side of brain on left side.
  • Headaches begin from the nape of the neck and extend to the front portion or sometimes the other way round from the frontal area to the occipital area.
  • The pain of hormonal headache is much similar to migraine headache. It is throbbing and bursting in nature. The patient often feels as if the brain will burst.
  • It is often accompanied with nausea and vomiting. Sometimes there is blurring of vision.
  • Hormonal headache become worse in sunlight, loud noise etc.
  • Headache lasts for few hours and repeats daily for few days till menses begins.

Treatment & Home Remedies For Hormonal Headaches

There are several remedies for treating headaches related to hormonal fluctuations. These types of headaches can be cured with conventional medicines which include analgesics, antiemetics, NSAID’s etc. However, if these medications fail, patient may need hormone replacement therapy which may include trasndermal estrogen patch and estrogen containing pills to keep concentration of estrogen uniform in the blood.

Home remedies are also beneficial in alleviating hormonal headaches.

  • Eat bananas daily as potassium found in bananas is useful in stabilizing the hormones and reduce the incidence of headaches.
  • Head massage is time tested home remedy for curing headache.
  • Some people find relief from headache if they wrap a tight band around the head.
  • Peppermint is natural herb to improve headache related with hormonal fluctuations. Prepare peppermint tea and drink one cup of it two times in a day.
  • Drink passionflower tea before and during menstruation to abort hormonal headache related to menses.
