Humans are warm blooded, that means their body temperature does not fluctuate to a greater extent and generally remains within a range in any climatic change.
Normally human body temperature is 98.6 degree F or 37.0 degree C. Occasionally there may be a slight rise or fall in body temperature this is considered normal. But when the temperature passes a couple of degrees below the normal value, it is a sign of worry.
There are several causes when the body temperature becomes too low. In medical terms, the condition is also called hypothermia. When the body temperature slips below 95 degree F or 35 degree C, it is considered too low.
Causes And Symptoms Of Too Low Body Temperature
You may have experienced rise in body temperature some time in life, it is called fever. It occurs due to variety of conditions but chances of low body temperature are very few.
Prolonged exposure to cold climate or cold water can lead to low body temperature, especially if you are not covered properly with warm dress. This can happen with an accidental fall in cold water as in boat accident.Too cold air conditioning can affect elders and children. Other medical conditions are:
- Addison’s disease.
- Liver failure.
- Kidney failure.
- Alcohol and drug abuse.
- Sedatives and diuretics.
Symptoms of low body temperature:
- Body feels too cold.
- Shallow respiration.
- Confused state of mind.
- Pulse and heart beats are slow.
- Slurred speech.
- Gradual loss of consciousness.
High Temperature Of The Body
Now let us know when body temperature is too high;
As you know the normal temperature is 98.6 degree F on the thermometer. But it is normal for the body temperature to fluctuate one degree above or one degree below. It depends on the activity of the person, environmental changes, body hormone activity etc.
You will notice difference of temperature when you measure it orally, and in your armpit. Therefore to generalize, fever can be divided into low grade fever, moderate and high grade fever.
Low grade fever is in the range of 98. 6 degrees F to 100. 9 degree F; between 101 to 102 degree F it is considered as moderate fever, whereas if the body temperature reaches above 102 to 104 degree F, it is high fever.
Body temperature is considered highest when it is 106.7 degree F. The condition is called hyperpyrexia.
High Body Temperature Causes And Symptoms
High body temperature is also called hyperthermia. Here the body produces and absorbs more heat. Following are some of the conditions when body temperature is too high.
- Bacterial infection.
- Viral infection.
- Heat stroke.
- Heat exhaustion.
- Intracranial hemorrhage.
Symptoms of high body temperature include:
- Hot dry skin
- The skin becomes red due to dilatation of the blood vessel
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weakness and fainting
- Increased heart and respiratory rate
- low blood pressure
- Organ failure
- Unconsciousness and coma
