Too much water in breasts can cause discomfort in women and some may even feel bloated and ugly. Here are some symptoms of water retention in breasts:
- Swollen breasts. One may actually feel that her breasts are bigger and more swollen than normal.
- Painful breasts. Water retention in the breasts can cause stretching and adds up pressure on breast tissues, resulting in painful and swollen breasts.

- Side effect of menstrual cycle. There are women who experience swelling enlargement of breasts prior to their menstrual period.This condition is caused by the rising and falling of hormones in the body. Prior to menstrual cycle, women experience imbalanced hormone levels. Low levels of progesterone causes the kidney to hold on more sodium and water.
- Fluctuations in blood sugar. Lack of sugar causes the adrenalin to rise up which causes stored sugars in the cells to be used up by the body. When these stored sugars are used, water then fills in.
- Too much salt intake. High consumption of sodium can cause water retention not only in the breasts but also all throughout the body.
- Too much caffeine intake. Foods and drink rich in caffeine such as coffee, sodas and some certain teas can result to water retention.
Home Remedies For Water Retention In Women
- Healthy diet and skip the junk foods. Junk foods and other preserved foods are rich in sodium which holds on to water. So instead of these junk foods, load up on fruits and vegetables instead. It is also advisable to eat starchy foods as it helps in the sugar level of the body.
- Avoid diuretics. Although over the counter diuretics can help eliminate water, some of them actually contain caffeine. Caffeine can worsen breast pain.
- Drink water. This may be ironic, but water is a natural diuretic minus the caffeine. It can help flush out excess water in between cells.
- Calcium supplement. Seventy-five percent of women who take 500mg of calcium supplement each day say that they are relieved from premenstrual water retention.
- Vitamin B6. Taking 250 mg of Vitamin B6 can also help in premenstrual water retention.
- Parsley or uva-ursi tea. These herbal teas can help remove excess water from the body and only contain a little amount of caffeine compared to black teas.
