Question: I have two daughters one was born in 2004 and the other one in 2006. For past two months I have been experiencing terrible back pain and the pain has traveled to my lower back as well. And this week just a day before my menses I had thick dark brown discharge. Is something wrong with me? I can’t control my urine and bowel movement for more than two minutes. My age is 33 years.
Answer: At 33 years you are certainly not in your menopausal phase. Can you tell me if you are on birth control pill? Or do you have IUD inserted as a birth control measure.
Backache can be associated with various reasons. Backache during menopause and during periods is common symptom. But when it is excruciating and radiating to the lower back, one has to rule out if there is associated fibroid in the uterus.
The other reason of your backache may be lumbar vertebral disk pain or back muscles spasms.
Was the dark brown discharge for the first time? It is normal to get this type of discharge in women for few periodic cycles. But a fibroid has to be ruled out.
Backache During Menstruation
Some of the reasons for this condition nowadays are hazardous working lifestyle, sedentary lifestyle along with physical and mental stress and conditions which tend to increase your psychological ailments.
Investigation advised: X-ray of lumbar spine, ultrasound of pelvis and abdomen.

Treatment For Back Pain During Periods
Few of the home remedies for backache during periods are:
- Lemon: mix one lemon juice in water and add some salt, drink lemon juice at least twice in a day when backache is acute.
- Garlic: take two cloves of garlic in early morning. Garlic oil can be applied on the back. Garlic oil is prepared by frying 5 to 6 cloves of garlic in mustard oil in a frying pan. This oil should be used for massage and be allowed to be there for 3 to 4 hours before washing. This procedure should be carried out for 2 to 3 weeks at least.
- Chebulic myroblan is also beneficial in treating backache due to menstrual periods. Eat a small piece of this fruit after meals to relieve backache.
- Raw potato helps treating severe pain in the lower back region especially in the lumbar part of the back region. Raw potato application is found to be very effective as poultice.
Prevention Of Back Pain
- Avoid long physical stress which can strain your back and cause back pain. Do sit in any position for long time. Move about every half an hour. Do lift anything heavy. Avoid wearing high heel shoes or foot wear. Try to be away from stress and worry.
- Take rest, especially bed rest.
- Diet should consist of a salad of raw vegetables such as carrot, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber and radish. Two vegetables should be taken daily and they should be lightly cooked or steamed. One can use carrot, Cabbage, cauliflower and spinach. Fruits should be taken in abundance especially the watery ones.
- Fruit and milk should be taken in your daily breakfast.
