Menopause is a stage in woman’s life where she ceases to menstruate. Menopause sets between the age of 40 to 50. In some women it may be an early phenomenon, while in some it can be late. Woman cannot procreate after she attains the stage of menopause.
Follicle stimulating hormone is also referred to as FSH. It is the hormone secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. The main function of FSH is to regulate menstrual cycle in a women. It stimulates ovaries to produce eggs for fertilization. Besides this it also stimulates estrogen production from the ovaries.
High FSH Levels In Menopause
- FSH level is high after menopause. It is 50 to 100mIU/ml. While the normal value in a menstruating woman is between 3 to 10mIU/ml.
- Follicle stimulating hormone higher than 25 suggests that a woman is in premenopausal period, while FSH more than 50 suggests that the woman is in menopause.
Hormone Levels After Menopause
A consistently high FSH indicates the failure of ovulation, which occurs in menopause.
Thus the relationship between Follicle stimulating hormone and menopause makes it easy for a woman to identify whether she has attained menopause.
