Menstural Irregularities Causes | Delayed Menses and Weight Gain

Question:

Hi, I am 22, I gained weight in the period when my menstruation is not proper, and I haven’t got my period for the last 4 months. Now, am feeling some weight in my stomach? Is there any relation between weight gain and periods?

Answer:

Irregular Menstruation Causes

There are several causes for menstrual irregularities and most of them seem to be related to weight gain. It is possible that hormonal disturbances can result in irregular menstruation and can trigger weight gain.

Some conditions of amenorrhea (i.e. complete absence of menstrual bleeding) include:

  1. Pregnancy: Use a urine pregnancy test to ascertain your condition if you think it could be possible.
  2. Ovarian conditions like poly cystic ovarian disease, ovarian damage, mumps, etc. These conditions may cause irregular menstruation and are coupled with weight gain. Visit your gynecology and get yourself physically examined. Also undergo an ultrasound, which will help you determine if you suffer from PCOD or an ovarian problem.
  3. Weight gain in itself is related to menstrual irregularities. If you have gained a lot of weight in recent times, it in turn can affect menstrual flow.
  4. Several hormonal disorders like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, adrenal insufficiency, etc have been associated with menstrual irregularities and all these conditions also manifest in the form of weight gain.
  5. Other causes could include emotional disturbances, stress with a hectic lifestyle, new job or examination stress, etc.

It is best you consult your gynecologist to understand the underlying problem.

Can only a delayed menstruation also be considered as symptoms of menstrual irregularities otherwise duration and other things are ok.

I am not having my periods for 6 months and I know I am not pregnant because my tummy is not growing. I do not have morning sickness and doctor also told that my pregnancy chance is less so he did not let me do the blood test and gave 15 days medicine but it is still not happening.
