Question:
I am twenty-two year old and I have painful periods. I have also had 2-3month long bleeding and sometimes I don’t get my period for 2-3 months at a time. I have already gone to the doctor and she asked me to get an internal ultrasound done which is normal. I waited 4 months before I went to the doctor because I thought It would regulate, It has been two years since this started. I just really want to know what is wrong with me. I know this can’t be normal.
Answer:
Delayed Menstruation
Irregular menstruation can occur because of a host of pathologies. An ultrasound is a limited diagnostic tool which can only ascertain certain pathologies of the ovaries and the uterus. However it can’t detect other pathologies which might cause irregular menstruation. Certain other non localized pathologies include:
- Problems with the pituitary gland which may result in under secretion or over secretion of hormones
- Thyroid disorders like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism which may result in excessive bleeding, weight gain or weight loss, change in appetite, increase or decrease in basal metabolism, etc
- Cushing’s syndrome, which causes increase in production of corticosteroids secreted by the adrenal glands. This condition also tends to affect the normal patterns of menstrual bleeding
In addition to hormonal conditions, there could be other reasons which include pregnancy, anemia, use of oral contraceptive pills, etc which may result in this problem.
In order to streamline the problem, it is recommended that you include green vegetables, milk and other dairy products, eggs, fish, soy, etc in your diet. In addition to this you can try homeopathic drug Sepia in low potency, repeated for a month. This drug is specifically helpful in streamlining and regularizing menstruation.
Also talk to your gynecologist to understand the implications and benefits of hormone replacement therapy. Hormone replacement therapy can aid in streamlining the menstrual irregularities but have other detrimental effects on health. It is important that you evaluate the pros and cons of the therapy, with your physician before initiating the treatment
