Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian Cysts

Question: Improved ovarian cyst but no pregnancy. I’m married since 3 years, primolute. And have not taken treatment.

Answer: Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sac found in the ovaries. They are common and occur at any time during the child bearing years. Ovarian cysts are of different types and most of the isolated cysts possess little or no consequence. However, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or Stein-Leventhal syndrome, which causes multiple cysts in the ovaries, is commonly associated with female infertility.

The other symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Irregular or Absence of menstrual cycle.
  • Weight gain.
  • Persistent Acne and spotty skin.
  • Hirsutism (excessive hair growth).
  • Thinning of scalp hair.

While ovarian cyst may sound worrying, the truth is that most cases are actually harmless. As such, this type of cysts is better left alone unless they begin to be troublesome to a woman’s health.

Do Ovarian Cysts Cause Infertility?

  • While there is no 100% assurance that women with ovarian cysts will also become infertile, it is always recommended not to treat ovarian cyst lightly.
  • Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs in the ovary. In some cases, the cyst is cancerous, while it is benign in most cases.
  • Ovarian cysts are sometimes caused by a woman’s own menstrual cycle. This is the case if there are some obstructions in menstruation that allow mass to form up and block the ovary.
  • Ovarian cysts usually do not have symptoms aside from occasional pelvic or abdominal pains. However, relying on pain alone is an inconclusive proof of the ailment as there are other factors that can trigger pelvic and abdominal pain.

Diagnosis

  • Blood investigations to measure levels of testosterone and lutenising hormone will help in confirming the diagnosis of irregular menstrual cycle.
  • An Ultrasound scan will help in identifying the existence of cysts on the ovary.
