Secondary Amenorrhea, No Period Causes | Missing Periods after D&C

Question:

I was suffering from heavy bleeding since June-09 due to endometrial hyperplasia. I am also suffering from PCOD and hypothyroidism. My doctor suggested me to get D/C done. I was having bleeding even after D/c so doctor prescribed me to take Pause (medicine). Since then I have no periods. After 5 months. Can you please advise me?

Answer:

The medical term for absence of menstrual cycle is known as amenorrhea. It can be primary or secondary. In primary amenorrhea the menstrual periods have never begun, where as in secondary amenorrhea there is absence of menstrual cycle since 5 to 6 months in a woman who was previously menstruating.

Are you still continuing the medicine (pause) which your doctor has prescribed?

Do you take the medicine for hypothyroidism regularly?

Delayed Menses Causes

Some of the causes which can cause secondary amenorrhea are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Contraceptive pills
  • Weight loss in severe illness like tuberculosis.
  • Stress and strain

Medical conditions causing secondary amenorrhea are:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Polycystic ovarian disease
  • Increase in prolactin level
  • Ashermans syndrome, here there is scarring of the uterine lining following dilation and curettage of the uterus, done for some medical condition.
  • Usually if the person who has discontinued the contraceptive pill should get the menses within a period of 3 months, if it does not return the other causes of secondary amenorrhea should be looked for.

You have to consult your gynecologist for the delayed periods; he may advise you for certain hormonal tests as you are suffering from hypothyroidism and PCOD to ascertain if they are not the underlying cause for absence of menses. Sonography of the uterus may be necessary to find any uterine abnormality.
