What Causes Vaginal odor or Menstruation odor

Normal vaginal discharge has to be differentiated from the flow which is not normal with odor and smell. This odor and smell to the menstrual flow is usually due to some infection in the vagina (majority of the times) or in the cervix (less common).
Vaginal complaint usually Tricomonal infection is the cause of the complaint. Tricomonal infection causing vaginitis is the most local cause of odor during menstruation and menstrual smell.
Usually odor to the flow is accompanied by abnormal discharge which is associated with itching in the vagina and this can be transmitted to the partner.
Monilial vaginitis is also another cause for the menstruation odor. This is usually seen in diabetic or in pregnancy or in females taking antibiotics or oral contraceptive treatment.
Cervix infection or cervicitis is the other factor which can cause the problem. Here the discharge is present and is usually accompanied with backache.

Menstruation odor and Vaginal odor Home Remedies

Douching is very time tested remedy for the complaint of menstruation odor and menstrual smell problem. This has to be done after four or five days after the completion of menstrual cycle.

  • Rice-wash is very useful for douching. This is used since olden days.
  • Triphala  can also be used for the preparation of douche.  Triphala powder, is a combination of  whole powdered fruits of Beleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), Chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula) and Indian Gooseberry (Emblic myrobalan). A warm vaginal douche is prepared by taking 20 gms. of Triphala powder. To this powder add up to two liters of water and after boiling it for 15 to 20 minutes, filter this preparation and cool it to a temperature tolerably hot to you and use it as douche.
  • Decoction  of  the bark of Symplocos racemosa (Lodhra) is also useful for this purpose. This too has to be used as vaginal douche.
