A woman entering into menstrual age can begin as early as age 8 though 12 is average. When a girl starts may depend on factors such as nutrition, genetics and other environmental considerations as well. For example, some research suggests that young girls who live in a household with non-biologically related males may start their menstrual periods earlier. Generally a young woman will start her period within two years of the time her breasts start to grow (mayo clinic). If a young woman hasn’t begun her period by the age of 16, she may have a condition called amenorrhea. Though amenorrhea is not a disease, it is more of a symptom of an underlying condition, a girl should consider seeing a health care practitioner if she hasn’t begun her period by this menstrual age.

Women will have continue to menstruate until they reach menopause unless she has a health condition that interferes with her cycles. Generally menopause does not occur until after 40 and then usually not until a woman is 50-55. After missing 12 consecutive periods, she is no longer fertile and has reached menopause. It is at this point that her menstrual age is completed.

Throughout the menstrual age a fertile woman can conceive a child. Her cycle will be driven and controlled by hormones that are geared toward reproduction. In the first few weeks of every cycle, her body will be focused on the maturation and release of her egg and in addition, preparing the uterus to sustain a developing fetus. This means that a woman can possible conceive from the beginning of her menstrual age until she is well into perimenopause. He menstrual cycle begins on the first day of her period and will run between 28 and 31 days for most of those years.
