Causes of Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding | Home Remedies for Irregular Periods

Question: I am a 33 year old married woman. I have noticed that periods are bit longer. Now it takes about 9 or 10 days to stop bleeding completely. My periods are not heavy nor do I get cramps. I have normal bleeding for 4-5 days and then no bleeding for another couple of days and then scanty bleeding for about 3 days. What are the causes and home remedies for prolonged periods?

Prolonged bleeding may be associated with psychological or physical problems. Psychological causes of prolonged bleeding (in your case 10 days) may be due to emotional stress, overexertion, fatigue, etc.

These result in loss of emotional stability, which affects the functional balance of the body and produces alterations like prolonged and continuous bleeding.
Physical causes include hormonal disturbances. Other causes include a possible miscarriage, hormonal fluctuation occurring due to starting or stopping or missing oral contraceptive pills, low levels of thyroid, gynecological procedure undertaken for an abortion, vaginal dryness, etc
Some drugs, mainly anticoagulants are known to result in prolonged bleeding. Consuming Aspirin, especially during menstruation is known to prolong the menstrual bleeding.

You mentioned you have spotting after a five-day cycle for about 3-4 days.

What is the colour of the blood?
If the blood is dark brown it signifies that the uterus couldn’t expel all of the menstrual tissue during the normal menstruation, which is coming out later in the form of spotting. If the spotting has occurred only on a couple of occasions, it is should not cause undue concern. However if it occurs for more than two cycles, it is imperative that you visit your gynecologist.  On the other hand, if spotting is bright red, you should not delay your visit to your gynecologist. Bright red spotting may be due to a host of conditions including ovarian cyst and endometriosis.

I have had the Mirena as a birth control for the past 2 years and me and my bf decided to try for another kid so I had it removed 3 months ago well everything has been fine up till 16 days ago when I started my period. It through me off guard because I had my period a week in a half before that. What could be the problem and what should I do?

I am a 25 year old married women. My menstrual cycle is very irregular. I get my period once or twice a year. I don’t cramp but I bleed way more than the normal amount with clots the size as golf balls. It usually lasts about 6-8 weeks heavy. I had a ultrasound and everything was clear. I have not been able to get conceive and I have been trying about 3 years. What can I do to stop this bleeding and have a baby? Or does this sound bad?

In order to get conceived, you should have regular menses. In your case, apart from sonogram, you need further blood hormone tests, to find the reason of delayed periods. A gynecologist referral is advised in such situation.

I am 47 years old. I have been bleeding almost 35 days. I went to my Dr. She did a uterine biopsy to rule out cancer, which it did. she said that my body was lacking progesterone due to not ovulating. She gave me prometriun pills for 10 days (400mg per day). She said I should stop bleeding after i take medicine, but it didn’t stop bleeding. When I fished my pills, I have very heavy period, untill now I am still bleeding.
what’s wrong with me. I really need help!

      Hi,

I too faced this problem. Doctor gave me Norethist tablets which should be taken 6 pills per day, depending on your bleeding quantity. 2 morning , 2 evening, 2 night until it stops, then 2 per day — 1 morning and 1 night for almost 20-25 days. once you stop after 4-5 days you will get regular period.

But some how in my case. following months the same problem.
