Treatments For Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is one of the common complaints that women have. Although a lot more common in their advanced age, especially after their menopause, there are also young women who complain of the condition. A dry vagina can cause a lot of discomfort, especially during sexual intercourse. The lack or absence of lubricant in the vagina can get in the way of sexual satisfaction for couples.

What Causes Dry Vagina?

There are plenty of factors that cause the condition, but the most common are the following:

  • After childbirth. It is common that the vagina becomes dry after giving birth.
  • Due to old age. As the body becomes older, it loses some of the ability to contain fluids, thus resulting to dryness in some parts of the body
  • Due to smoking cigars or cigarettes.
  • Due to low estrogen levels. There are various factors that can cause the estrogen level to drop so low. One of these is taking birth control pills or due to the use of hormonal sprays.

Treatment for Vagina Dryness:

The following are the common means used to treat vaginal dryness:

  • Use water-based lubricants. Water-based lubricants are by far safer than its oil-based counterpart.
Just apply the lubricant on the vaginal opening. This is very important before sexual intercourse. In such a case, it will be better to apply the lubricant to your partner’s penis.
  • Ironically, one remedy for vaginal dryness that couples can try is to have sex regularly. Regular sexual intercourse encourages the production of vaginal fluids for lubrication. However, couples should be careful with it especially during episodes of dryness wherein lubricants may be needed. When such episodes occur, couples must not rush, instead, they must allow time for the woman’s body to become aroused and produce lubrication as its response to arousal.
  • Take estrogen: For low estrogen in young women, there are two ways for this. The first one is through local application. In this case, estrogen comes in the form of cream or tablet that is directly inserted into the vagina. It lubricates the vagina’s interior only. The second means of application is called systemic estrogen. This is done when the cause of low estrogen level is bodily changes such as menopause. Estrogen is taken in the form of pills, which stimulates the body’s production of estrogen.
