Home Remedies For Menstrual Cramps Or Dysmenorrhea: Symptoms, Causes

Sometimes a woman will experience painful cramping while she is having her menstrual period. When the cramping and pain are intense and regular, she may be suffering from dysmenorrhea. It affects mostly women below 25 years of age. For some it may disappear with age or after childbirth but for some it continues till menopause. This painful condition is classified as being either primary or secondary dysmenorrhea.

The primary type begins when the woman first begins menstruating and will likely continue throughout her life. Secondary dysmenorrhea frequently begins later in life when an underlying condition such as endometriosis occurs that aggravates the condition.

Primary dysmenorrhea may be caused by a hormonal or chemical imbalance. There may also be other factors such as structural problems internally.

Secondary dysmenorrhea may be caused by an assortment of conditions. For example, uterine fibroids and Pelvic inflammatory disease are two conditions that may lead to dysmenorrhea.

Symptoms And Causes Of Menstrual Cramps

  • Sharp, irregular, cramping pain in the uterus, lower back or lower abdomen and sometimes the pain shoots down the thigh.
  • Hot and cold sensation.
  • Headache occasionally.
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea and fatigue.

Causes Of Dysmenorrhea

  • The discomfort is caused by uterine spasms, which are very powerful and temporarily deprive the uterus of oxygen.
  • These spasms are triggered by hormone-like substance that the body releases in excess during menstruation.
  • The other factor maybe gynecological disorders like pelvic tumor, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic cramping or pelvic inflammatory disease.

Home Remedies For Menstrual Cramps

  1. Discomfort of the lower abdomen can be relieved with hot water bottle or heating pad.
  2. Soda, chocolate, tea and coffee may worsen cramps.
  3. Cycling, swimming, running and walking may help to reduce cramps.
  4. Take plenty of rest during the menstrual period.
  5. Juice extract of a couple of beet roots should be consumed daily for 2-3 months. It is a tonic for the sexual system, Beet is loaded with anti-oxidants, therefore, it detoxifies the entire body and most importantly, normalizes the menstrual function.
  6. Hip baths: a week before the onset of menses, hip bath in warm water will be very useful in relieving cramps before period starts.
  7. Sesame seeds: every night, soak 2 spoons of black sesame seeds in water. Have the seeds, the subsequent day with water. Do not dispose of the water. Sesame seeds are known to regularize the menstrual function and alleviate menstrual cramps totally.
  8. Another remedy for menstrual cramp is coriander. Make a concoction of a fistful of seeds and drink the concoction 2 weeks before the period.
