Blood Clots During Periods | Clotting and Cramps During Menstruation

Question: I’m 19 years old and reached menstruation stage at the age of 9 years. Since last 5-6 years, I’ve noticed clots during menses. My diet includes fruits, vegetables, non-vegetarian and greasy stuff. My friend has advised to reduce the amount of salt in food and lower the intake of tea and coffee. But that has not made any difference. My dates occur at correct intervals i,e. after every 28 days and I do get shivering in legs during menses. Please suggest how to get rid of this problem?

Clotting of blood occurs as a part of the body’s haemostatic mechanism to control excessive bleeding.

Ideally a woman bleeds approximately 80 ml per cycle and if the bleeding is more, clots occur. Clots occur due to retention of blood in the uterus.
Though, a little amount of clotting during menses can be considered normal, there are a lot of factors that cause clotting during periods including excessive bleeding, enlargement of the cervix following delivery, fibroids, endometriosis or any obstruction to the outflow of menstrual blood (occurring due to a polyps).

Blood Clotting Causes During Periods:

  • Use of anticoagulants or steroids or chronic illness may also result in excessive clot formation during menstruation.
  • Use of oral contraceptive pills have been known to produce changes in the normal hormonal balance of the body. Have you recently started or stopped OC pills? The occurrence of clots due to change in hormonal status is normally short lived.
  • You should be concerned only if there is excessive pain during menstruation; the bleeding is more than usual or the clots are larger than a few inches in size.
  • As a simple measure get your blood test done and check for the level of hemoglobin and your bleeding time (BT). If it is within a normal range, don’t worry.

I am 22, my periods started when I was 16 years old. I have a problem of irregular MC. I have this problem right from the time I started menstruating. sometimes the gap is 2 to 3 months. During my menstrual cycles I do not have any type of pain or any problem. I had also taken a 3 month course pills.
After some years I started homeopathy but due to that medicines now from 3 months I bleed after 28 days. But the bleeding is very less and only blood clots along with some red watery fluid.

If you have h/o sexual contact, you have to rule out missed abortion as one cause, for that you will have to be examined by a gynecologist, you can visit another gynecologist if one is not available, but that is important for your health.

I am 19 years old. I Started my periods at the age of 12 and have had regular flows till the age of 15 years. My cycle then started going for 10-12 days, I consulted a gynecologist who put me on some medication. Things were back to normal, but then at age 18 the irregular periods started again. I consulted a nurse at the campus clinic, she put me on the contraceptive pill. This made the cycle normal again but it would come at irregular times and at times I would miss my cycles for 2-3 months. I decided to stop the contraceptive pill. This year I had a normal cycle till I missed it during the month of August. I went for a pregnancy test and the results were negative. My periods then started on the 16th of September and have been on ever since, meaning I have been bleeding for 22 days, and it is still going. The bleeding is abnormally heavy with clotting and unbearable pains. After 16 days of this happening I went back to the campus clinic, the nurse said she can’t help me, but mentioned that my body might be aborting. She referred me to a gynecologist for further investigation. Unfortunately I was only able to get an appointment for the 8th October. I am anemic so this excessive loss of blood is making me ill. I feel weak, tired and have dizzy-spells. Please advice me on what I can do in the time being.

My periods started when I was 13 years of age. For 3 years since the onset of periods, I used to bleed profusely. But then the flow reduced suddenly. Now, I am 32 and unmarried. My flow / bleeding has reduced further, although I never miss any period. I have a 28 day cycle. Is this reduction in flow normal?
