Abdomen Swelling, Bloating Treatment | Reduce Swollen Belly

Question:

I had a total hysterectomy 3 weeks ago. How do I reduce the swelling in my belly? Also, how long will the swelling last?

Answer:

Swelling or bloating of the abdomen is commonly seen after most abdominal surgeries. It is caused due to distress to the abdominal tissues, gases used during surgery, and / or liquids accumulating within the tissues as a consequence of trauma during the procedure. Remember,

  • It makes an appearance soon after surgery, and may remain for about several weeks or even months.
  • The condition is aggravated by excessive activity, lifting heavy things, standing for prolonged periods of time being on your feet too long, and wearing tight clothes.
  • It also seems to worsen in the evenings.
  • Diet will not really help reduce the swelling in the tissues.

Treat  Stomach Bloating

  • Primarily, you avoid the triggers – extreme activity or exercise, standing for long, carrying heavy things and wearing tight clothes.
  • Occasionally, a good support panty can help, but then again, ensure that it isn’t too tight.
  • Ice packs or a heating pad might help too, but do consult your gynecologist.
  • Exercising will definitely tighten the abdominal muscles. But the swelling in the tissue may not disappear with exercise.
  • You need to wait a little patiently for you body to heal and the swelling to recede.
  • A word of caution, in case you notice any pain or redness, report to your doctor immediately.
