Vitamin E is helpful for the following conditions:

  1. Heart Disease: Intake of adequate amounts of vitamin E strengthens the walls of the blood vessels and decreases clotting of blood inside their walls. In a study, 100 patients with heart disease were given 200 mg of vitamin E daily. They were compared with an equal number of patients who were not given this vitamin. The latter experienced four times the number of heart attacks caused by clots. Similarly, 457 patients had no clots while taking vitamin E as compared to 23 clots suffered by 246 patients who were not given the vitamin.Vitamin E is said to markedly reduce the need for oxygen and is, hence, of particular value for all persons with heart disease. In coronary artery disease, for instance, oxygen starvation is a major problem. Moreover, many deaths from a heart attack are due to oxygen deprivation. When adequate vitamin E(as prescribed} is given, much less of the heart tissue is destroyed, and a patient may survive an attack which otherwise might have proved fatal.
  2. Varicose Veins: A lack of vitamin E is a cause of frequent blood clots which, in turn, play a role in the production of varicose veins. Tests have proved that blood clots which blocked circulation were produced in animals whose diet lacked in vitamin E. When this vitamin was added, formation of these clots stopped. The veins became dilated, and extra blood vessels developed around the areas of the clots quickly. Similarly, giving vitamin E to human beings has be.en found to prevent clots, and clot formation recurs if vitamin E is discontinued. Varicose veins appear most frequently during pregnancy.
