Red Dots On Skin Not Itchy: Causes And Treatment For Petechiae

When you talk of skin conditions, the foremost symptom that strikes your mind is itching. But not always itching is associated with skin manifestation. Some conditions of red dots on skin which do not itch are significant; they may arise in the inner layer of the skin (dermis), due to hemorrhage in the skin, with or without inflammation.

Red Dots On Skin Not Itchy

Pinprick red dots on skin which do not itch are usually petechia. They are tiny red hemorrhagic spots less than 2 mm in diameter. They are usually brownish red or purple in color.

It occurs when the capillaries (tiny blood vessels) below the skin rupture, due to trauma or medical conditions.

Petichial red dots are most commonly secondary to failure of the normal haemostatic mechanism, especially platelet deficiency.

Non Itchy Red Spots On Body

Normally these red dots are seen in ankles and feet, but they can occur in any part of the body or all over the body. The condition of platelet deficiency is called thrombocytopenia.

Cherry angioma: A group of dilated blood vessels, get together to form a clump underneath the skin to form red cherry like benign skin tumor.

It is a harmless skin growth in elderly individuals. It is a raised red skin dot on the skin which is non itchy.

Causes Of Non Itchy Rash

Some of the causes of non itchy red dots on skin are:

  • Aplastic anemia.
  • Leukemia.
  • Thrombocytopenic purpura.
  • Hypersplenism.
  • Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency.
  • Hemolytic uremia syndrome.
  • Prosthetic heart valves.
  • Hypothermic anesthesia.
  • Von willebrand’s disease.
  • Bernard soulier syndrome.
  • Scurvy.
  • Cushing syndrome.
  • Senile petichial hemorrhage.
  • Marfans syndrome.
  • Dengue fever.
  • Rickettsial infection.
  • Fever.
  • Drug induced
  • Sun exposure.
  • Radiotherapy.
  • Chemotherapy.
  • Easy bruising syndrome, more common in females especially during menses.
  • Vitamin K deficiency.
  • Polycythemia vera.

Treatment For Petechiae

There is no symptomatic treatment for petichia, or the non itchy red dots. It does not resolve on its own, unless the underlying cause is treated. Red dots due to sun exposure can be prevented by applying sun screen lotion, before going out in sun.
