Blisters are fluid filled tiny lesions that occur anywhere on the skin surface. They may also develop on the eyelids, both on the upper eyelid as well as on the lower. Blisters on eyelids cause inflammation and pain. They may appear on the upper surface of the eyelids or on internal side of the eyelid. Usually these blisters are apparent and they can be easily identified. The eyelid becomes swollen and red.
Blisters on eyelids is an annoying condition, patient finds it difficult to blink due to pain and swelling. It hampers his daily activities.
What Causes Blister On Eyelid?
Eyelid blisters can be distinguished into two varieties, those occurring on the eyelids and the ones that are present on the inner surface of eyelid. Blisters may appear due to several reasons such as:
- Allergic reaction: It is one of the most common causes for development of blister on the eyelid.A fluid filled blister may develop due to a bite of an ant or an insect sting. Patient may complain of burning pain, itching and swelling immediately after the bite. An allergic reaction may also occur due to cosmetics and eyeliner. Food allergy and certain medications can cause allergic reaction.
- Ocular herpes: Herpes is a skin infection caused by virus herpes varicella zoster. It is the same virus which is responsible for chickenpox. Sometimes the dormant virus reactivates to cause herpes later on in life. Herpes can develop on eyelids. It is called ocular herpes. The lesions can spread inside the eyes and affect the eyeball. If it occurs patient may lose his eyesight.
- Sunburn: Blisters on eyelids can also occur due to excessive exposure to sunlight. They may develop around and on the eyelids.
- Stye: This condition develops inside of the eyelids, mainly on the margin of eyelid. A stye is painful condition. It develops when the oil glands of the eyelid is blocked. If infection sets in, pain and swelling are common.
- Acne vulgaris: This skin problem is common if your skin is oily. Due to dirt and grime, the pores get blocked and infection sets in. Though uncommon, acne vulgaris can develop around the eyelids.

Treatment of blister on eyelids depends on the underlying cause. In majority of cases blisters resolve without leaving a scar.
- Blisters resulting from allergies resolve within few days. The pain and burning sensation can be alleviated with natural remedies. Aloe vera gel helps to soothe the pain and burning sensation caused due to the allergy. Your doctor may also prescribe anti histaminic medicines to reduce the suffering.
- Cold water compresses are useful in alleviating pain and swelling due to blisters.
- Avoid breaking blisters as there is risk of infection.
- While applying ointments, all hygienic precautions should be taken to prevent infection. Wash your hands with soap before you touch the eyelids.
- Applying a thin layer of aloe vera gel on the eyelids is also beneficial to heal sunburn blisters.
- In case of herpes infection, you have to consult an ophthalmologist. Anti viral drugs are mainstay treatment to reduce pain and inflammation. It also enhances the healing period.
- Warm compresses are beneficial in treating stye. Few days of warm fomentation will help the stye to break and release the accumulated pus. Once the pus comes out, pain reduces. Apply antibacterial eye ointment on the stye. You may also require oral anti inflammatory and antibiotic medicines to cure the infection.
