What Cause Vitiligo or White patches on Skin
Vitiligo is also called as leucoderma. It is a disorder characterized by patchy loss of melanin pigment from otherwise normal skin (and hair). It is presumed to be an autoimmune disorder. Family history or similar illness is available in majority of cases. Most frequently it occurs to someone who has thyroid problems. Premature greying of hair may also occur. All this points to a deficiency of certain B complex vitamins.
Symptoms of Vitiligo or Leucoderma
Lesions may start at any age, but generally in early adulthood and any part of the body may be affected.
Diagnosis of vitiligo is often obvious, de-pigmentation of overlying hair confirms this. Vitiligo is a distressing skin condition, as our skin color is important biologically, cosmetically and socially.
How to Prevent Vitiligo
Avoid cheese, yeast, wine and pickled herring. Food rich in vitamins A, B complex, magnesium, zinc and copper should be consumed.
Natural Cure for Vitiligo or Leucoderma
- Babchi (Psoralea corylifolia) is a best known home remedy, paste made out of seeds of babchi should be applied over white patches and should be exposed to sun rays early in the morning for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Turmeric powder mixed with mustard oil is also beneficial when applied externally over the patches twice a day.
- Red clay is another useful remedy for vitiligo, this clay should be mixed with ginger juice in equal quantities and should be applied over the white spots once a day. High copper content in clay is assumed to restore skin pigmentation.
- Khella (Ammi visnaga) also helps. The active ingredient in khella stimulates re-pigmentation of the skin. Take 120 to 160mg khella every day but use it with caution, for it may cause side-effects (nausea and insomnia).
- Another herb that may help is St. John’s wort, it also increases the skin’s response to sunlight, producing coloring. Do not use this herb during pregnancy or lactation.

I have had a thyroidectomy to remove a large multi nodular goiter. I also suffer from Lichen Sclerosus, sjorgrens syndrome, scleroderma parry-romberg syndrome and Raynauds.
