What are Skin Bruises?
Shortly after an injury caused by a fall or blow, discoloration of the skin takes place. Aspirin tablets can also cause this.
Symptoms of Bruises
- After an acute injury the skin exhibits a reddish tinge, which gradually turns black and blue and finally discolors to greenish yellow
Causes of Bruises
- Medication such as anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs, cortisone, aspirin and anticoagulants, disease and trauma causes damage to blood vessels and bleeding into the skin, and when blood settles in some area discoloration occurs.
Home Remedies to Heal Skin Bruises
- Take acetaminophen to reduce pain. Aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they may increase bruising and swelling.
- Raise the damaged area, above the heart level to reduce swelling and bleeding.
- Bleeding and swelling can be reduced by using ice packs on the bruise for 20 minutes, repeat after every 2 hrs for 2 days.
- 2 days after using icepacks, use a heating pad, shower or warm bath for 15 minutes increment, to open up the surrounding blood vessels and to speed up healing.
