Question: My toe has pink circular color. What do you suggest?
Did you hurt your toe a few days back/ Do you suffer from diabetes or have a family history of the same? What is your age? Does the lesion itch, burn or tickle? Do you have edema surrounding the discoloration? Do you see the discoloration of the nail bed along with the skin around?
The discoloration of the skin may be simply a Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation (PIH), which occurs around inflamed wounds. It is a natural response to inflammation. PIH may be associated with pink, purple, brown or black discoloration depending on your skin tone and the depth of the discoloration.
The raised pink toe discoloration is an indication of a fungal skin infection. Fungal infection may have occurred due to excessive moisture or lack of hygiene around the toe.
If you are a diabetic you should be more careful. It may have occurred due to an in grown of a toenail, which may be prompting the inflammatory reaction. It is possible that such an inflammatory reaction may not be accompanied with pain, as diabetics normally don’t feel pain due to degeneration of the nerves. If you are a diabetic, visit your family physician, as the injury may further lead to infection causing a diabetic foot.
Tips and treatments for discolored toe:
- Make sure you keep your toe well ventilated. Use foot wear which allow air circulation rather than closed shoes. Avoid using socks, if you perspire a lot in your feet
- Clean the spot regularly with Dettol and make sure you completely dry it before going to bed
